Inter & Lazio, 2002 continued

The Saga continues (la saga continua)

May 5, 2002 in Milan, Italy. The whistle blows and the game begins, with inter taking control of the game. At the same time Juventus is playing Udinese and their outcome will also determine Inter's who is only one point ahead. Eleven minutes in, Juventus scores with a goal from Del Piero and Inter is facing more preassure, they have to beat Lazio to win the game. The game gets more intense until finally Cristian Vieri, the Inter forward, strikes a critical blow. Off zanetti's corner kick, he runs near post and kicks the ball in when the goalie fumbles it, running into the stands with exitement. He takes off his shirt to celebrate to the crowd who is on their feet, cheering.
Minutes later, Lazio scores. The crowd is quiet. A stupid mistake and a stupid goal. Inter keeps pressuring until they get a corner kick. Just like before, the ball comes near post, and as if in slow motion the crowd holds their breath as Di Baggio, the Inter midfielder, heads it in. The crowd goes crazy and so does Di Baggio. Once again there is hope. Inter is so close.
Fiore, from Lazio, put one in minutes later, and the Inter reign was over. Inter's constant attacking, was useless in the end. Ronaldo making poor shots and the attacking approach left them vulnerable in the defense... Lazio scored two more goals. The final score was 4-2. The crowd was left quiet and devastated knowing the trophy had only been minutes away from them.
And that is the story of Inter's sad past that many wish to forget. It is a story of the hard times of Inter's history, but the true fans have never given up hope. Today the patience has paid off. But it is important not to forget the past and the hard times so that we can continue to grow stronger.
Ronaldo left crying that year to Real Madrid.
